Mapping out Poverty Stricken Areas of Bangladesh (Project # 23 )

Researcher: Dr.A M M Shawkat Ali
Project Status: Completed Projects

Although information on poverty covering both income and non-income dimensions are available from Household Expenditure Survey and other sources are in plenty, the measurement approach is purely food-based. It is recognized that in spite of the endemic nature of poverty in Bangladesh there is still very little effort to map out the hardcore poverty-stricken areas. The location of poverty stricken areas need to be identified to target areas and the people for meaningful poverty alleviation strategies. The specific objectives of the study were to : (i) collect existing maps as they relate to the poverty; (ii) identify common geographic areas (districts) as they occur in maps; (iii) prepare a map based on common geographic areas and classify them according to the degree and severity of poverty; and (iv) indicate next steps for future research. The study has led to the identification of poverty-stricken areas under categories very high and high. Six districts, which are found common in all the three studied poverty maps, are Nilphamari, Rangpur, Shariatpur, Lalmonirhat, Kurigram and Sirajganj. It is also significant that except for Shariatpur, all the 5 other districts are in Rajshahi Division and can be regarded as areas with most vulnerable and poor segments of Bangladesh population.
