Waterborne diseases are endemic in Bangladesh. Hundreds of thousands of persons die every year as a result of these diseases. Water is often contaminated with arsenic and other pathogenic organisms. The poor suffer the most from the scarcity of pure drinking water. Thus the need for a low cost affordable water purifier/filter is urgently felt. The main objective of the research is to develop a low cost earthenware/ceramic water purifier/filter. The filter would also be useful at the time of natural disasters, particularly during the flood season when pure drinking water becomes the scarcest of commodities. Another objective of the project is to train local potters to develop pitchers/ containers for both unfiltered and filtered water. The first objective of the project i.e. development and testing effectiveness of a low-cost water purifier has already completed successfully. The second component of the project i.e. training to the local potters for developing pitchers / containers for both unfiltered and filtered water is progressing well.
