Development of an Appropriate Production Technology for Low Cost Water Purifier

Researcher: Dr. Arif Mohiuddin Sikdar

Waterborne diseases are endemic in Bangladesh. Hundreds of thousands of persons die every year as a result of these diseases. Water is often contaminated with arsenic and other pathogenic germs. The poor suffer the most from the scarcity of pure drinking water. Thus the need is felt for a low cost affordable water purifier/filter. The main objective of the researcher, Dr Arif Mohiuddin, is to develop such a low cost earthenware/ceramic water purifier/filter. The filter would also be useful at the time of natural disasters, particularly during the flood season when pure drinking water becomes the scarcest of commodities. Another objective of the project is to train local potters to develop pitchers/ containers for both unfiltered and filtered water.
