In Bangladesh, most local institutions and infrastructures
like schools, colleges, hospitals, roads and embankments
were built in the past through local initiatives without
any foreign assistance. Even during the first few years
of the post-independence period, manifestation of many
spontaneous local level initiatives was observed at
the rural level in different parts of Bangladesh. These
initiatives are effective tools in bringing improvements
in the lives of the local people. One of the examples
of these initiatives in the recent past is the collective
agricultural movement in Maheswarchanda village of Jhenainah
District in southwest Bangladesh that made it a hunger-free
village. Similar people's initiatives have been undertaken
in different parts of the country, the knowledge of
which has remained confined to the respective localities
This research project aims at identifying successful
people's initiatives, organize and encourage their champions
to promote and replicate such initiatives in other areas
and successfully document the replication strategy.
Local journalists, social workers and enthusiastic students
will be involved in identifying these initiatives. Following
the identification, they will establish a countrywide
network. The network will continue to document new initiatives
and develop linkages at the local level with other areas
for the adoption of similar initiatives after necessary
adaptation based on local circumstances and needs. The
output of the research will also be in the form of a
workbook containing information of all the successful
initiatives for use by any interested individual and
organization.
