Struggle for Survival of the Hardcore Poor: An Alternative Approach.

Researcher: Dr. Lenin Azad

The project is an action research with the active participation of the hardcore poor. The poor themselves will participate fully as researchers. The researchers will collectively try to unravel an alternative path to poverty alleviation and investigate what can be done for improving their present condition. The poor researchers will try to reach a collective understanding regarding causes of their own poverty, historical perspective of their poverty and their overall conditions. They will identify their personal and collective potentials, which can be used for poverty alleviation. One hundred hardcore poor families in Saidpur, Nilphamari District, in north Bangladesh, will carry out the research, based on the concept of dignity and self-reliance with minimal external assistance. The outcome of the research is expected to increase collective and personal self-esteem, dignity and active initiatives, which may lead to further steps to alleviate poverty. Overall it is expected to expand their mode of thinking and to have positive impact on their collective psychology.
