Although information on poverty covering both income
and non-income dimensions are available from Household
Expenditure Survey and other sources are in plenty,
the measurement approach is purely food-based. It is
recognized that in spite of the endemic nature of poverty
in Bangladesh there is still very little effort to map
out the hardcore poverty-stricken areas. This research
will map out the poverty stricken areas of Bangladesh
for obtaining a holistic view by pooling together all
information that indicate the geographic focus in order
to target areas and households for poverty alleviation
measures. This mapping will be very useful for all future
poverty research, development interventions, and disaster
management purposes. The identification of the poverty-stricken
areas is expected to be followed up by an action research
design for initiating homegrown self-reliant efforts
for the target groups.
