The collection and transportation of stone from natural
source is a highly labor intensive job. The laborers
involved in stone collection, however, do not enjoy
the deserved remuneration for their labor and remain
the victim of extreme poverty resulting from exploitation
and deprivation by the businessmen or middlemen and
lack of awareness, education and organization. The objectives
of this research are to investigate the present socio-economic
conditions of the stone laborers of Jaflong area in
Sylhet district and also to review and analyze the causes
of their poverty in order to make a participatory search
for solutions to overcome and redress them. The stone
laborers, in the process of reflecting on their own
situation, with the facilitation of an external animator,
will organize themselves to raise their awareness regarding
basic rights, gender, labor rights, savings and other
needs to uplift their position in the occupation by
enforcing better conditions of production, transportation
and marketing through collective effort. This is basically
a capacity-building research but its findings are expected
to be useful for concerned government and non-government
organizations who would be informed about them through
seminar, mass media and possible forms of publications.
