A Participatory Action Research Involving the Benares Weavers of Habu Chaurahat to Improve Their Livelihood Condition

Researcher: Mr. Mamun ur Rashid

This is a Participatory Action Research (PAR) aimed at stimulating the self-reliance initiatives of the weaver communities of the Benarasi saree (a silken drape embroidered with golden thread worn by women on ceremonial occasions) industry in a small village of Gangachara upazilla in Rangpur district in the northern region of Bangladesh to reflect upon the problems within the industry and of the poverty groups involved in the industry so that they are able to identify necessary solutions to overcome the constraints related to skill and technology improvements, marketing, and organization building. Besides generating research skills of the young researcher, the participatory approach is expected to awake the inner strengths of the weaver communities to achieve a self-sustained economic betterment through the improvement of the industry as an alternative source of income in rural Bangladesh where agriculture still remains the major source of income generation and employment.
