The Kaoras are a vulnerable group living in the southwestern
regions of Bangladesh who are considered as untouchables
by both Hindu and Muslim elites. Their main occupation
is to rear pigs throughout the countryside round the
year. Because of their occupation, they are socially
and culturally untouchable and have remained discriminated
against in all sorts of development activities. The
main objectives of this research project are assessing
the socio-economic condition of the Kaora community
and to develop a strategy for poverty alleviation by
combining modern pig rearing technology with their traditional
knowledge and experience. Families experienced in pig
rearing will be involved in this pilot project where
technical assistance and other support including supply
of three species of good stock pigs will be provided
from research support. The new knowledge on pig rearing
technology and the transfer of this technology is expected
to generate better income and earning for this vulnerable
group.
