The then British Government brought the members of
the Harizon community from Uttar Pradesh of India for
keeping the Chittagong town clean. There was no improved
sanitation system during 100 years back. Members of
the Harizon community i.e. the sweepers used to clean
and disposed the wastes from the service latrines, drains,
dustbins etc. through contractual engagement by the
Chittagong Municipality. Sweepers are considered untouched
by the mainstream community and are being severely marginalized
in education and other human rights. The present study
is aimed at writing the history of the sweeper community
i.e. from where, when and how they have come from their
original homeland to Chittagong and their present livelihoods
patterns and extent of marginalisation. Publication,
dissemination and discussions of the history will create
a condition of social mobility positive attitude of
the mainstream population towards Harizons.
