Action Research on Participatory Planning for Improved Sanitation : The Case of a Remote Village in Manikganj District

Researcher : Surovi Camelia and others

The sanitation condition of Bangladesh is still vulnerable. Only 53% of the people use waterlogged sanitary latrines. Some people also use home made latrines. About 44% of the people use no latrine. As a result, the fresh water is being contaminated although there exist serious crisis of fresh water, particularly in flood-prone areas. People also do not use common sanitation practices such as washing hands with detergents after using toilets and before taking food. As such, people suffers from various types of diseases, mainly water-borne, and it's rate is so high that this has created much pressure on the economy of the country. It has been estimated that the country is spending Tk 5 crore annually for controlling and treating diseases caused as a result of non-use of sanitation practices. It is not the poverty but lack of awareness that is the main cause of not using sanitation practices by the people. The present study aimed at (i) assessing the present knowledge, attitude and adoption of improved sanitation practices; (ii) improving the level of awareness about the benefits of adopting sanitation practices; (iii) preparing a plan for adoption of sanitary measures ; and (iv) capacity building of the students' researchers. The study will be conducted in Swalpa Sinjuri village of Ghior Upazila in Manikganj district. Participatory Research Methodology using group formation, group discussions, workshops etc. will be used. This is a capacity building research for four student researchers of Jahangirnagar University.
