Poverty and health : Women in tannery

In tannery, where new leather is processed the major activities include saltation of the raw leather, cleaning and drying with chemicals, cleaning the leather surfaces with hand pressure, collection of residuals of the processed leather etc. These activities clearly shows an unhygienic and unhealthy environment and is expected to have severe health hazards like skin disease, asthma, chronic coughing and chest diseases. This may also cause major health hazard during pregnancy. Women's participation in tannery is a part of tannery industry in Bangladesh. The main foci therefore, on women's participation and examining the issues related to this from the women workers' point of view in the tannery industries. Thus the specific objectives of the study are : (i) perception of women workers regarding their socio-economic conditions, health seeking behaviour, working environment and gender relation in working place; (ii) problems prioritisation of women workers by participatory approach; (iii) types of health hazards they experienced; (iv) social status and obstacles; (v) diversity and seasonality of their work; (vi) health facilities and support system for the women workers; and (vii) women's ideas and suggestions to improve their socio-economic status and reduce poverty. The research will be based mostly on qualitative data. The methods to be employed include observation, focus group discussion, informal interviews and case studies.
