Technology Development for Making Sand-based Bricks (Blocks) for Employment and Empowerment of Sand Workers

Researcher : Abu Sayeed Ahmed

Huge number of sand-workers is engaged in lifting and carrying sand from the sand-lands emerged in river of Durgapur, Netrokona district. These are the superior grade sands containing both fine and coarse gravels coming down from the hills of India. Researcher as President of Sand-Workers felt that this high quality sand could be used for making concrete bricks. Sand-based concrete bricks will be environment friendly and less costly than the conventional fire-burnt bricks. The present research is aimed at (i) developing a technology for making sand-based concrete bricks and (ii) developing a prototype semi-automatic machine for making such bricks. Cost of making such bricks should be less compared to conventional bricks. The technology expected to be developed should be standardised and recommended by the concerned authorities. A group of scientists from BCSIR and experienced civil engineers will do the job. The technology and the machine expected to be developed will be used by the sand-workers for their increased employment as well as empowerment.
