Context and Contribution of Lac Cultivation for the Poverty Alleviation in Bangladesh

Lac is a secretion produced by the insect species Karia laccak in association with the host plants. It is used as a natural paint, varnish, maintenance of automobile engines, in making ornaments etc. Lac cultivation is mainly concentrated in some selected areas of Chapai Nawabganj district. Major objectives of the project are to identify the appropriate techniques of lac cultivation and processing as well as its impact on rural economy; (ii) identify community perception about lac cultivation; (iii) identification of background and context of introducing lac cultivation; (iv) understanding methods of lac cultivation, processing and marketing; (v) identify the problems and corresponding solutions of the same; and (vi) assess the ways and means for popularising lac cultivation. The present research will be conducted in Chapai Nawabganj. Households cultivating lac will be selected using purposing sampling technique. Direct participant observation method, formal and informal interviews as well as use of notebooks and diaries will be adopted in conducting the study. This is a capacity-building research of a student of Rajshahi University.
