Livelihood Improvement and Poverty Alleviation of the Cobbler Communities Through Self-Development : An Action Research

Saidpur (in Nilphamari district) is a densely populated town of Nilphamari district. A large section of the population are Urdu-speaking. Members of the cobbler community of this town are facing serious socio-economic problems. As the members of this community lacks educational and other institutional /government facilities, hence there exist almost no chance of professional mobility. Cobblers are 'untouchable' by the mainstream population and hence they live in extreme 'exclusion'. They are also excluded from the target of development interventions both by the GOs and NGOs. Specific objectives of the present project are to (i) identify the causes of poverty and searching ways and means for improving their socio-economic conditions; (ii) assess the present conditions of the women and children members of the cobbler communities and finding ways and means of improving their existing socio-economic conditions; (iii) identify the educational problems of the children and adolescents; and (iv) prepare a long-term plan for poverty alleviation of the cobblers. The proposed study also aimed at identifying the paths of poverty alleviation of the cobblers. Participatory action research methodology will be adopted in conducting the study.
