Role of Rural Women in Poverty Alleviation : A Study of Two Selected Villages in Naogaon District

Project Status: On-going

The broad objectives of the study include to (i) investigate into the nature and dimension of poverty of the study village; (ii) explore the efforts of the women in the village to alleviate their poverty; and (iii) help the poor women to increase their level of awareness regarding various poverty alleviation efforts (i.e. income generating activities, corporate action etc.) and self-reliance. Specific objectives of the project are to (i) know the demographic and socio-economic characteristics of the poor women; (ii) identify the causes of poverty and to explore the role of rural women in taking various measures for alleviation of poverty; and (iii) assess the effectiveness of various efforts made by the women to overcome their poverty. The study will be concentrated in two selected villages in Naogaon district of the country's northern region. A complete enumeration procedure will be followed for both the villages to gather basic socio-economic data about the households in the villages. The field work for the study will be conducted in three phases, i.e. (i) census of approximately 450 households; (ii) conducting the main study among the poor households using PAR methodologies and tools; and (iii) in-depth case studies of 15 poor households. This study is undertaken primarily for capacity-building of young researchers.
