Project Status : On-going
Fishermen from coastal areas face obstacles and hardships
that are unique to their profession. On the one hand,
most of them have not inherited their profession from
their families; for social and economic reasons, they
have been forced into their line of work and thus face
gaps in knowledge and information regarding their trade.
On the other hand, ubiquitous natural disasters, along
with a depletion of fish due to commercial over fishing
along the coastal belts have put extra pressure on their
careers. This research project aims to look at how both
technological innovations that are friendly to their
lifestyle and existing indigenous knowledge among their
communities can help to create a sustainable lifestyle
for coastal fishermen and their communities. The research
methodology used will be based on Participatory Action
Research (PAR) with a strong focus on how the fishing
communities themselves can come up with self-sustaining
ways to protect and cultivate their culture and lifestyle.
The research output will hopefully find ways to mesh
existing knowledge with new ways to preserve their rich
and vibrant culture.
