Golpata ( Nypa fruticans, Wrumb) a type of palm is
grown in uncared for wild places in the southern coastal
districts of Bangladesh including Sundarban areas. Golpata
leaves are mainly used in making houses and saps extracted
from the inflorescences and used for making a kind of
raw sugar called '' Golpata Gur''. In many countries,
Golpata has many industrial uses such as making quality
vinegars, raw sugar, livestock feed, wine etc. Extensive
research have been undertaken to develop improved verities,
extraction methods and diversified uses of Golpata.
In Bangladesh, no research have so far been undertaken
regarding screening improved verities and extraction
technologies as well as uses for industrial purposes.
Some members of the local communities of the coastal
areas entreat saps from the wildly grown Golpata by
using their local indigenous knowledge and technologies.
These indigenous knowledge and technologies are yet
not known to the scientific and other communities. The
major objectives of the study will be:
|
| 1. |
Indigenous knowledge and technologies now of used
by the RAKHAIN and other marginalized local communities
in sap extraction and gur processing techniques
from Golpata are identified. |
| 2. |
Indigenous knowledge and technologies used in
the production of Golpata, processing, storage and
marketing of gur and other Golpata -based products
are identified: |
| 3. |
Impacts of gur processing and other Golpata based
products on lives of the Rakhain and other marginalized
local communities with special emphasis to family
income, employment of men and women as well as household
uses are assessed: |
| 4. |
Improved knowledge, techniques and potentialities
of (a) Golpata production (b) processing (c) storage
and marketing of gur (d) other products such as
production of high quality vinegar, livestock feed
etc are identified. |
