Socio-Economic Obstacles Faced by the Dalits and the Way Forward

Researcher: Milon Das

Project Status : On-going

The Dalit (untouchable) communities in Bangladesh are living in sub-human conditions even after 33 years of independence through the Constitution of Bangladesh provides no such scope for disparity with these communities. This condition can be well understood by the following:

l Solemnity will be damaged if anyone sees the Dalits;
l Going to a destination will not be "auspicious" if anyone sees a Dalit before his/her departure;
l Custom says that even the shadow of a Dalit is to be avoided;
l Dalits are not allowed to enter into temples, schools and restaurants.
The specific objectives the project aims to achieve are:
1. To know about the political, economic and social customs of the Dalits;
2. Identify the causes of untouchability and caste system, assess its impacts and caste-oriented problems;
3. Search for a relationship between poverty and untouchability and to avert poverty through poverty eradication;
4. To know about the social structure of the Dalits; and
5. To identify the strategies to face and fight the social barriers faced by the Dalit communities.
Participatory Action Research methodology is being followed to conduct the study.
