Most of the factory or labour laws, orders and regulations
are not being implemented in Bangladeshi garment factories.
As a result, the workers are being deprived of their
various rights. They are suffering from various problems
like sudden dismissals, unfavourable working conditions,
extra-ordinary long working days, compulsory overtime
work, lack of health and sanitation, absence of medical
facilitators, low wages, dismissals without payment
of wages or bonus, etc. They are not allowed to take
part in any trade union activities. As a result, they
are not in a position to bargain. It has been reported
that they face pressure, even physical abuse, if they
try to make any organized demands. Recently several
trade union organizations and activists voiced the conditions
of work, especially of the vast number of female garment
workers. They also felt the need to establish an impartial
inquiry by the Gonotadanta Commission (Mass Enquiry
Commission). It is expected that the Commission will
be able to formulate recommendations that will have
a positive impact to improve the working conditions
of the Bangladeshi garment workers. Specific objectives
